Eliane Brum, a Brazilian writer, journalist and documentary filmmaker will give a lecture entitled "Why the Amazon is the center of the world. And why that means we are screwed."
As humanity confronts the climate crisis, the world's greatest rainforest takes on a strategic importance. Without a robust Amazon, there is no possibility of drawing down enough emissions to keep temperature rising below 2 degrees Celsius. Yet Brazil’s current far-right government believes that global warming is a conspiracy of the left. In her lecture, Eliane Brum will discuss how the Bolsonaro administration’s plans for the Amazon impact the planet and make it urgent to envisage an alternative future, grounded in the experiences of the people of the forest.
