Professor Rebecca Biron gave the opening keynote address for the Simposio Internacional Elena Garro hosted by the Universidad Autónoma de la Ciudad de México (UACM) in Mexico City, September 24-26, 2014. With over 150 people in attendance, the event honored the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Elena Garro's most widely read novel, Los recuerdos del porvenir. Biron's address drew from her recently published book, Elena Garro and Mexico's Modern Dreams (2013).

Assistant Prof. Noelia Cirnigliaro is the co-editor of Touching the Ground: Women’s Footwear in the Early Modern Hispanic World, a special issue of The Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies (Routledge). This collaborative special issue has been recently awarded The Society for Study of Early Modern Women (SSEMW)’s prize for the Best Collaborative Project of 2013 in Gender and Women’s Studies. The prize committee indicated: “Moving with and beyond material culture, and unlike biographies of objects, the introduction and the essays bring forward powerful insights by working across and between categories, disciplines, cultures, genders, and orientations. In terms of theoretical sophistication, methodological interest, and global perspective, this collection has it all.” The prize ceremony takes place on Saturday, October 18th, 2014 at the Sixteenth Century Society Conference in New Orleans, LA.

Kianny N. Antigua, Lecturer of Spanish, is honored during the VIII Dominican Book Fair in NYC (Oct. 26-28, 2014) for her work and accomplishments as a Dominican writer with numerous publications and literary prizes, and as a cultural promoter in the US and in the Dominican Republic. She is the author of Mía, Esteban y las nuevas palabras (Alfaguara, 2014), El tragaluz del sótano (Artepoética Press 2014), and Cuando el resto se apaga (Élitro Editorial del Proyecto Zompopos 2013), among other publications.
