Annabel Martín appointed Bernardo Atxaga Chair at CUNY

In October 2019 Annabel Martín, an associate professor of Spanish, comparative literature, and women’s, gender, and sexuality studies, will be the Bernardo Atxaga Chair at City University of New York Graduate Center, where she will teach a doctoral seminar on the arts and political violence and give a public talk on reconciliation in the Basque post-ETA context. The visiting appointment, named for one of the most prominent, award-winning, and translated (over 20 languages) living Basque writers is funded by The Etxepare Basque Institute, a cultural institution of the Basque government.  To date, The Etxepare Institute has established eight endowed chairs to promote the study of Basque culture at universities worldwide: CUNY Graduate Center, University of MA-Amherst, Boise State University, University of Nevada-Reno, University of Chicago, Université Bordeaux Montaigne (Bordeaux, France), University of Liverpool (UK), and Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität (Frankfurt, Germany).  The Department of Spanish and Portuguese had the honor of hosting Bernardo Atxaga as a distinguished visiting professor and writer in residence in the summer of 2003.
