Department Faculty Interviewed on Spanish Radio

Professors Annabel Martin and Txetxu Aguado were asked to participate in the interview of Pilar Zabala, a Basque human rights activist whose brother, Joxi Zabala, was kidnapped and murdered by the illegal Spanish state-sponsored counter-terrorist group, GAL (Grupos Antiterroristas de Liberación), on October 15, 1983.  His body and that of his close friend Josean Lasa, also kidnapped on the same day and murdered, went missing and their bodies were identified 11 years later.  Those responsible for the crimes on the Spanish Guardia Civil force and in the Ministry of the Interior, including the Minister of the Interior himself, were tried and found guilty.

Earlier this year Professors Annabel Martín and Txetxu Aguado published an interview with Pilar in the International Journal of Iberian Studies.  The October interview was directed by journalist Eva Domaika, for the Cadena SER, "La Ventana de la Memoria" (The Window of Memory). Francisco Etxeberria, the director of the forensic teams that are working to identify the remains in mass graves from the Spanish Civil War, identified the bodies of Lasa and Zabala and is also part of the program.
