Ricardo Liniers Siri, better known by the name Liniers, is a writer, publisher and illustrator. His work has been compared to that of cartoonist legends Charles Schultz (Peanuts) and Bill Watterson (Calvin and Hobbes). This Winter Term the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at Dartmouth College has welcomed Liniers to teach Spanish 43.05: Drawn to Resist: The Latin American Comics. The course is set to explore how cartoons and comics have played important roles in the political and social processes of Latin America for more than a century. The course is designed as a workshop, where students approach the world of comics from a historical and practical point of view. It covers the most significant periods of Latin American comics tradition. By the end of the class, students will be able to deploy a range of different methods for analyzing comics, including formal technique, genre, authorship, and intertextual analysis. Liniers also guides the students into a unique experience of personal exploration on how comics tell stories through words and images (no drawing skills are required). Works by Caloi, Fontanarrosa, Maitena, Montt, Oesterheld, Quino, Rius, etc.
More on our invited artist:
Born in Argentina in 1973, Liniers started his artistic career making fanzines for his friends when he realized he was not made for law school. Since 2002 he has published his daily comic, Macanudo, in Buenos Aires’ La Nación challenging Argentina’s traditional concept of comic by brewing a universe of eclectic characters. Macanudo is also published in El Pais (Spain) and HoyxHoy (Chile). Together with his wife Angie he founded Editorial Común with the aim of publishing graphic novels by local and foreign authors. He has more than 30 books published, many of which have been translated into English, French, Italian, Czech, German, Portuguese, Korean and Chinese. He tours Latin America and Spain with musician Kevin Johansen, drawing on stage while Kevin’s band performs. He performs stand up comedy with his friend and colleague, Chilean artist Alberto Montt. He has illustrated 5 covers of The New Yorker magazine. He currently lives in Vermont (USA) with his wife and 3 little daughters.
