Staged Rebellions: Dissidence in L.A. Theatre with Prof. Santana

This course follows the history of a select number of Latin American paradigms of using theatre for social change. Students in this class will learn about Augusto Boal’s Theatre of the Oppressed, guerilla theatre in forms used throughout Latin America (Yuyachkani, Teatro de Los Andes, Enrique Buenaventura), and activist performance (Violeta Luna, Katia Tirado, Denise Stoklos). In order to give coherence to this broad field, the readings will focus on plays that have as their central theme rebellion and the rebel. Our goal is to see how these themes are developed dramatically and theatrically, as well as within the historical and national context of each play-text and performance.
